Calendar:
published Friday, 25 November
Instructions:
During the first quarter, you worked to refine your writing skills in composing and organizing formal, five-paragraph academic essays. Now that you have demonstrated a reasonable amount of proficiency doing this, it is time to move on to new types of writing tasks for the second quarter.
For the first assignment of this quarter, you will work in a group of five or six students to create a publication (newsletter, website, magazine, etc.) showcasing the writing of your group. To do this, you will need to divide the workload so that every member in the group contributes in a significant way and to come up with specialized jobs for each group member.
Suggested jobs:
copy editor: in charge of editing written work for errors in spelling, grammar, etc.
art editor: in charge of the layout of the publication, photography, artwork, etc.
reporters: create written text for the publication, may specialize in news reporting, sports reporting, entertainment reporting, etc.
You are in charge of dividing the work among your group, but be sure that every group member contributes and does a relatively equal amount of work. I would recommend that group members share jobs and possibly perform more than one task.
Grading:
This assignment will be graded using the 6+1 Traits of Writing and focusing on all traits, including Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions and Presentation. We will be working in class over the next few weeks on understanding each trait in order to use it effectively. The publication itself will be worth 200 points.
In addition, you will complete an in-class reflective writing assignment detailing your role in the publication as well as the role of the rest of your group members. This assignment will be worth 50 points.
Additional Information:
I would encourage you to be creative about this assignment. Make your publication interesting and eye-catching. Take a look at examples and maybe include some of the features you see in other types of publications: letters from readers, advertisements, etc. All of these extra features will help you create a successful assignment.
