Instructions:
For this assignment, you will compose a five-paragraph essay expressing your opinion about a controversial topic of your choice. The main purpose of this type of essay is to explain your opinion about the topic and explain that your opinion is correct. Your essay should be organized in the following way.
Paragraph 1: introduction containing a hook or attention-getting strategy, background information for your reader to understand your topic and a thesis statement expressing your overall main idea: your specific opinion about the subject
Paragraphs 2,3,4: body paragraphs each containing a topic sentence expressing one reason for your opinion and supporting information and details to persuade your reader
Paragraph 5: a conclusion restating your overall opinion of the topic and providing a prediction, recommendation or warning for the reader to make a powerful final impression
Grading:
This essay will be evaluated using the 6+1 Traits of Writing and focusing on the following traits of voice and organization.
Additional Information:
This assignment and all others this year should be written in appropriate MLA format. It should be double spaced and written in a 12 point font. It should also contain a running header (last name + page number) on the top right corner of each page and a double-spaced heading on the top left corner of the first page. It should contain a creative title, which should be centered above the first paragraph. The first line of each paragraph should be indented.
